Cast :Aadhi, Nandha, Sindhu Menon, Saranya Mohan
Direction :Arivazhagan
Production:Shankar's S Pictures
Music :Thaman S
S Pictures production 'Eeram' is refreshingly moist and mellow justifying the title with a chilling theme conceived in a supernatural plot.
Movies of thriller genre are rare yet in contemporary times it is being revamped in flamboyant style bolstered by brilliant picturization. If 'Eeram' out stands from the lot and looks breathtakingly beautiful, then the ovation goes to cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa. The supernatural thriller shouldered by an amateur cast is fresh every way and the few glitches along the way are forgivable with respect to the execution.
In a new style of opening, the narration begins with the death of Ramya (Sindhu Menon), the female protagonist of the film and the nostalgic memories of the Assistant Commissioner of Police Vasu Devan (Aadhi) in the investigation. Reminiscing the past, Vasu delves into the sweet days spent with his beloved Ramya during their college days and the time when a trivial misunderstanding parted their ways.
When he finds her dead, Vasu couldn't help but take up the case voluntarily which is considered a suicide by the police. Ramya's husband Bala Krishnan (Nandha) and the residents of the high class flat criticize her to be the culprit. She is accused of having an illegal relationship but Vasu refuses to buy their claim. His instincts take him forward to reveal the spine chilling truth with supernatural elements taking center stage towards the end.
Director Arivazhagan definitely has made a stunning mark in his debut venture and is here to stay. The selection of lead cast is impeccable as their young faces give a new perception to the movie.
While Aadhi as the tough cop after shedding his rural moustache from 'Mirugam' rules the first half, it is Nandha with a psychotic performance rivets us in the second. With a trimmed body and a majestic voice, Aadhi has the potential in him. Nandha is at his level best and it is unbelievable to see the jovial man of 'Mounam Pesiyadhe' turn into such a refined actor. In the dais, debutant Sindhu Menon steals the show. Emotions ooze out of the girl, be it the cute lover, the caring wife or a heart broken woman, Sindhu is simply superb. Saranya Mohan and the supporting cast posing negative shades are neat.
After the directorial and visuals, it is Thaman's stomping music with eerie notes make it big. With only three numbers, he manages to score and the background score shows the musical talent hidden in the newcomer. Again one can't help but simply get awed by the amazing visuals that transformed Chennai city into a cloudy land of mist.
On the flip side, the few glitches lies in the dragging scenes slowing down the pace often and the thrilling plot in fact fails to thrill the viewers. Editing is top notch but the length at 2 hours 40 minutes should have been trimmed.
For carrying a thrilling plot with water as the pivotal element and visuals manifesting the mood, director Arivazhagan is another trust worthy maker to cope up with Shankar's production value.
'Eeram' has a few short comings but a movie that could be watched for its freshness and quintessential cinematography.
